Distinguished Alumni Awards - 2004

 

 

The Distinguished Alumnus Award is presented to a graduate who has achieved special recognition in his or her professional career. We are proud this year to honor:

Robert G. Urban, Ph.D., was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the May 2004 commencement ceremonies.

Dr. Urban is a 1986 graduate of the University of Texas where he received his B.A. in microbiology. He earned his Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from UTMB in 1991, and continued his training at Harvard University with a five-year fellowship in structural immunology.

From 1992 to 1995 Dr. Urban was founder and president of Tomorrow’s Technologies, a biotech consulting practice. His next venture was as scientific co-founder of ZYCOS, Inc. (formerly known as PANGAEA Pharmaceutical). ZYCOS, Inc., is a privately held drug development company based in Lexington, Mass. Since its inception in 1996, the Company has generated a series of distinct new medical entities and conducted multiple clinical trials in treatments for chronic viral diseases and cancer.

For the past 10 years, Dr. Urban has provided key leadership for ZYCOS, Inc., serving as Director of Infectious and Oncologic Disease, Vice President for New Technologies and Targets, and currently as Vice President for corporate development. ZYCOS, Inc. is a drug development company focused on converting genetic information into novel therapeutics. Dr. Urban co-invented the BIOTOPE therapeutic system and CANVAS discovery platform. He has overseen external collaborations, evaluations and in-house licensing of technologies for ZYCOS.

In his remarks to this year’s graduates Dr. Urban urged them to use their training and education, “to tackle the world’s most challenging problems… big problems, big problems need big solutions like the ones that you can provide.” He stated that, “science is a collaborative venture and that leadership skills and collective energy are essential for success.” In his closing remarks Dr. Urban expressed hope that the graduates would understand the joy of discovery, “Find joy in your work and you too will be rewarded in remarkable ways.”
