Ph.D.and Master’s degrees are more and more becoming
"gateway" degrees to a variety of careers including industry,
journalism, finance, government among many others. While the Ph.D. or
Master’s degree is a clear indication of problem-solving ability that
can be applied to problems outside science, graduates can find
themselves in careers that also require some basic understanding of
business and management practices. Some training in these areas not
found in conventional Ph.D. and M.S. programs would be helpful to degree
candidates and post-doctoral research fellows who are trying to prepare
for a variety of careers outside academia and would certainly also aid
the future academician. The purpose of the Advanced Business Management
Certificate Program is to provide some of this training in a program
format that complements and does not conflict with successful completion
of the Ph.D. or M.S. degrees.
In conjunction with The Center for Advanced Management Programs
(CAMP), School of Business and Public Administration, University of
Houston-Clear Lake, UTMB Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences will
offer a 12-week Advanced Business Management Certificate Program. This
program includes some of the highest rated UH-Clear Lake graduate
faculty and provides a broad survey of the subject areas normally found
in business school degree programs.
This unique opportunity offers a comprehensive and meaningful program
trainees in the biomedical sciences. Program participants will receive
state-of-the-art information and ideas from professional instructors
with an extensive knowledge of management, accounting and finance.
Participants will come away from this program with a thorough
understanding of basic concepts and practices of business management
today.
The CAMP Advanced Business Management Certificate Program is a
12-week series of sessions to provide biomedical professionals, and
graduate students with the base concepts and practices of business
management. The program forms a broad survey of the subject areas
normally found in business school degree programs. The twofold purpose
of the 12-session program is first, to give participants the knowledge
they need to work cross-functionally within their organization and
second, to prepare them to assume greater responsibilities and advance
their careers.

Graduate students and Post-Doctoral Fellows who want a
foundation of current business theory and practice and want to become
conversant with the variety of functional areas of business in order to
pursue careers in which such added experience is valued. Individuals
with technical backgrounds or highly specialized experience will find
the program to be a solid preparation for assuming broader management
responsibilities. The skills and information acquired through this
program are likely to benefit participants regardless of their future
career choices.

A Certificate of
Completion will be awarded to class members who complete (attend and
successfully pass) at least ten (10) of the twelve (12) program sessions and
actively participate, completing all readings and assignments. Of course,
the clear preference is that participants make a total commitment to all
sessions and assignments. Certificates are awarded based on the outcome
assessments involving the results of class assignments and case studies. The
$690 tuition fee will not be charged to participants who successfully
complete the program. All participants must sign a "pay back" agreement
before the first class. The certificates are in recognition of participants'
achievements, and they will receive their certificate at a reception
following the final session.
