Each year, the
Graduate
Student Organization
selects a person from the graduate school
faculty who has made outstanding contributions to their academic growth
and development. The
students make their judgment on the basis of teaching skills, tutorial
excellence and overall quality of, and enthusiasm for, graduate
teaching. The GSO award
this year is presented to:
Ehud Landau
received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the Institute of
Inorganic Chemistry, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, and
then earned his Ph.D. in structural chemistry from The Weizmann
Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, in 1988. He completed a
postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, and
was senior research associate at the University of Basel in Switzerland
from 1993–1999. Dr. Landau came to UTMB in January 2000, when he was
named professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, the
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and co-director of
the Membrane Protein Laboratory and senior scientist in the Sealy Center
for Structural Biology. He is currently a visiting professor at the
Institute of Biotechnology in Zurich.
Dr. Landau serves as the biochemistry
course co-director within the first-year Basic Biomedical Sciences
Curriculum. Other UTMB courses include “Membrane Proteins: A Primer on
Structure and Function.” In the fall of 2003, Dr. Landau provided a
series of eight biochemistry lectures for the first-year students. He is
recognized this year by the GSO for his organization and the
presentation of material for these biochemistry lectures. Dr. Landau has
a passion for teaching. According to his nomination, Dr. Landau is
always willing to answer questions and available to assist students or
to further explain his lectures, when necessary. Over the past 15 years,
he has participated in teaching courses in Heidelberg, Lausanne, Paris,
Copenhagen, Strasbourg, and Valdivia in Chile.
